As we have stressed repeatedly, the case for strategic planning is compelling: Organizations that plan and implement their plan are more profitable, much less likely to fail, make better use of resources, anticipate threats and capitalize on opportunities,etc., etc.
Yet, according to our prior research (which confirmed earlier findings by McKinsey), three-quarters of organizations don't develop and implement strategies leading to a shared vision of success. Many organizations that do have a plan don't execute their plan nor link it to their budget. Much of leaders' time and focus is directed to daily operations and problem-solving rather than addressing strategic risks and opportunities.
For the second year, we are conducting research on strategic planning and plan implementation practices used by companies, associations and non-profits. (Click here to download our report on the results of last year's survey.) Our 2013 Strategic Leader Survey seeks to identify strategy development and execution approaches that are working, as well as problems with various aspects of strategic planning and implementation. We also seek to assess how leaders evaluate strategic risks and opportunities and how this lines up with how their organizations approach strategic planning.
